Faith:
What is Faith?
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
What is ‘religious’ faith?
1 Corinthians 2:4 And my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, :5 that your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.
Note: Usually when a Christian states that one is to have faith, what do they really mean? One is lead to believe that what they mean is to have faith in God and Christ.
With minimal investigation, one will discover they mean to have faith in their doctrine of truth, their beliefs, and in their theology.
To whom are we to have faith in?
Mark 11:22 And Jesus answered saying to them, “Have faith in God“.
Matthew 7:24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock. :25 “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock.
Luke 6:47 “Everyone who comes to Me, and hears My words, and acts upon them, I will show you whom he is like:
Luke 6:48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation upon the rock; and when a flood rose, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
Acts 20:21 solemnly testifying to both Judeans and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Acts 24:24 But some days later, Felix arrived with Drusilla, his wife who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul, and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus.
Romans 3:22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;
Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
2 Timothy 1:13 Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 3:14 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them; :15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
James 2:1 My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism.
Revelation 14:12 Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.
Is one to have faith in their religion?
1 Corinthians 2:4 And my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,:5 that your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.
Galatians 2:16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.
1 Timothy 6:20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called “knowledge”– :21 which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith. Grace be with you.
Note: There are many Christian teachings and doctrines that were derived from Gnosticism. The Gnostics believed that one could know God through knowledge. [The more knowledge that one obtained, the more he knew God.]
2 Timothy 3:6 For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, :7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. :8 And just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected as regards the faith.
Note: Adhering to faith in theology over the Word of God is in opposition to the Bible.
Is theology ‘sometimes’ helpful for understanding?
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; :17 that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 4:2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. :3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; :4 and will turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths.
Note: It is Biblically impossible to combine theology with God’s Word, without distorting the true meaning of the Holy Bible.
Faith in any religion is a theological tradition.
